The Colombo District Court today (Dec. 30) rejected a petition filed by JVP dissidents seeking an injunction order preventing holding of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna convention on January 01 in Debarawewa, Hambantota.

The complaint had been made by by MP Ajith Kumara and G. Kularatne of the Movement for People’s Struggle who claim that holding the convention is against the law and that it has not received the approval of the JVP Central Working Committee.

The complainants, who state they had only been informed of the convention through media on Dec. 25, accuse the party leader and General Secretary of intending to arbitrarily appoint 226 members to the Central Working Committee at the convention.

They had requested an injunction order to prevent the convention being held on the said date as it could cause severe damage to the party.

However, Colombo District judge Ranjith Watukola rejecting the plea postponed the hearings till January 06, the date given for JVP Leader Somawansa Amarasinghe, General Secretary Tilvin Silva and 22 other respondents to appear before the court.
