Public to rally against UN resolution today

Islandwide demonstrations organized by the ruling UPFA government are scheduled to be held today (27) against a resolution, backed by the U.S. and several other Western countries, expected to be moved against Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) sessions in Geneva.

Acting Minister of Mass Media and Information Mr. Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene said on Saturday that arrangements have been made to demonstrate the people’s support through organizations of Alliance political parties and other public organizations throughout the country on an electoral basis.

“Express solidarity with the government and condemn attempt to interfere on Sri Lanka’s internal affairs by external forces by gathering on the streets of Colombo and other places on Monday,” the Minister called on the public.

Minister Abeywardene said these rallies will be held in a main town in each electorate and the main rally will be held centering Colombo.

So far U.S. and Norway have officially announced they would back the resolution against Sri Lanka, at the United Nations Human Rights Commissions to be held from today to March 24, while India is yet to express its stand on the matter.

Minister Nimal Sripala de Silva however speaking to the official government website on Sunday from Geneva claimed that India, Russia, People’s Republic of China, Cuba and several other nations are contributing in a significant manner to effort to defeat the resolution against Sri Lanka.

The 19th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) will commence at 2 p.m. local time today while Minister and President’s Special Human Rights Envoy Mahinda Samarasinghe is slated to address the council at 7 p.m. local time.
