The delegation of Cuba questioned the legitimacy and credibility of the draft resolution put forward by the US on Sri Lanka branding it “unjustified and unnecessary” and asked the Council if it was possible to postpone action on the resolution until September.
The Cuban delegation stated that the US had still not closed its prison at Guantanamo despite President Barrack Obama promising that it would be. The delegation pointed out that this could possibly become a point of confrontation and that it would be best if the resolution on Sri Lanka could be postponed.
Replying to Cuba, the US delegation stated that the resolution was a straight forward one and it had been the subject of open and transparent dialogue adding that it was appropriate for the council to be involved in this matter. The US also stated that the countries should vote the resolution up or vote it down instead of delaying it.
Cuba responded by stating that the resolution goes against the cardinal rule that all internal resolutions need to be exhausted first and that the resolution would undermine all national initiatives.
