UPDATE: Fonseka discharged from hospital, taken to SC

DNA MP, Tiran Alles stated that Sarath Fonseka was discharged from the hospital a short while ago. Fonseka was receiving treatment at Nawaloka hospital for an illness related to his lungs.

Fonseka had a check up this morning while the doctor told Alles that he would be fit to be discharged today.

UPDATE(1.30pm): Fonseka who was discharged from hospital was taken to the Supreme Court a short while ago. Afterwards he is scheduled to be taken back to the Welikada prison where he is expected to be released later today.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa signed the necessary papers for Sarath Fonseka’s release and had handed them over to the chief of Presidential staff on Saturday (May 18)

Presidential spokesman Bandula Jayasekara told Ada Derana that the release papers are scheduled to be sent to the Ministry of Justice today (21).

Sarath Fonseka is currently serving a three-year jail term having been convicted by the high court in the ‘white flag’ case, charged with causing public disaffection of the state through his statement.

Decisive discussions regarding the release of Sarath Fonseka, between Tiran Alles and the President, ended last week while the former army commander’s wife Anoma Fonseka also met with the President on Wednesday (16).

She later said President Rajapaksa had expressed the desire to release the army chief at the earliest.

The Minister of Rehabilitation and Prisons, Chandrasiri Gajadeera told Ada Derana that as of last night (May 20) he had not received any documents from the President but will take immediate measures to release Fonseka as soon as he receives the necessary paperwork. (AdaDerana)
