Nearly 3,000 suspects who are wanted on outstanding arrest warrants have been arrested during the last ten days from operations carried out in 8 provinces, police said.
The police department had come under fire recently for its failure to apprehend the chief suspect in the Katuwana shooting incident, Julampitiya Amare, who had five warrants issued for his arrest.
However, Inspector General of Police (IGP) N.K. Illangakoon had later instructed Senior DIGs in charge of provinces to launch operation to crack down on suspects with outstanding warrants and court notice.
Therefore a total of 2,814 were arrested during operations carried out from June 20 to June 30, police spokesman SP Ajith Rohana said.
These operations will be carried out continuously while the IGP has ordered to complete the operation by August 01, he said.
