A retired Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) was assaulted and his gold ring stolen in the Pitipana area in Homagama at around 12 noon today.

The suspect was however arrested and the ring recovered following a special operation carried out by the police, acting swiftly over incident.

Police said that the suspect is a ‘drug addict’ and that, at the time of the arrest, 5 warrants had been issued for his arrest.

A team led by Homagama Police Inspector Prasantha Ratnayake is handling investigations.

The assault victim, SSP (Retd) M.D.C. Saparamadu, has been admitted to the Homagama Hospital.

Saparamadu had served as the Director of the Police Fingerprint Bureau for a long period of time before retiring in 1993.
