President orders CID inquiry into Mannar incident

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has ordered Inspector General of Police N.K. Illangakoon to instruct the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to conduct a special inquiry into the Mannar incident, Presidential Spokesman Bandula Jayasekara said.
A large number of protesters had gathered in front of the Mannar Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (18 July), against a court order which was issued by the court, and had pelted stones at the court buildings and at police personnel.
Mannar police later used tear gas to disperse the crowds.
Meanwhile it was reported on Thursday that a Minister had allegedly threatened the Mannar Magistrate demanding that he overturn the ruling.
The Judges Association of Sri Lanka (JASL) and the Bar Association of Sri Lanka had decided to boycott court proceedings today (20) while both associations are take legal action against the Minister in question, over contempt of court.
