The Ministry of Health has launched investigations on an incident where a 62 year old woman from Horana died after receiving the wrong medication from a private pharmacy.
The Police Department is carrying out separate investigations while the Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena has instructed the Cosmetics, Devices and Drugs Regulatory Authority to conduct investigations on this matter.
Accordingly the authority’s Food and Drug Investigations officers have conducted investigations on the matter yesterday (25) and have uncovered that the pharmacy in question does not have a valid permit to sell pharmaceutical drugs.
It has also been revealed that the doctor had prescribed medicine for diabetes and the pharmacy had given cancer medication, with incorrect dosages.
The Health Ministry stated that following the completion of investigations, the pharmacy and the person who sold the drugs will be prosecuted.
