A group of bored Harvard students have given new meaning to the term space food, launching a hamburger into space.
Harvard University juniors Renzo Lucioni, Nuseir Yassin, Daniel Broudy, Jamie Law-Smith and Matt Moellman, sent the burger more than 98,000 feet (30km) into the atmosphere after attaching it to a weather balloon filled with helium.
The group said they were looking for a fun science project to break the monotony of study, the Daily Mail reports .
Preparations for the launch included gluing the layers of the two-day old burger together and coating it in a varnish.
The balloon took two hours to reach its maximum altitude before falling back to earth at 150km/h and landing in a tree about 200km north of Boston.
The burger’s space adventure was captured on film.
The group now plans to send more food into the upper atmosphere, with a burrito next on the list of space food. (Herald Sun)
