President Mahinda Rajapaksa has decided to appoint a commission to make a full inquiry into the Matale mass grave in addition to a police inquiry, Presidential Spokesman said.

An expert panel is expected to be announced by the President soon.

The JVP had called for a through investigation after hundreds of skulls and skeletal remains were unearthed following excavations at the mass grave discovered near the Matale Hospital.

Skulls and partial skeletons were discovered in November last year by workers building a facility at a hospital.

Excavations were carried out under a court order while the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology had conducted tests regarding the remains.

The JVP claims that the skeletal remains of 154 persons have been discovered so far and that forensic experts confirm that the grave could not be older than 1986 and not newer than 1990, a period when the then-government led a crackdown on leftist rebels.

Thousands of people disappeared during the JVP-led uprising between 1987 and 1990. Sri Lankan authorities have said that nearly 17,000 people were killed during the insurgency, a figure which includes rebels and their victims.
