VIDEO: Met Department apologises over naming cyclone ‘Mahasen’

The Meteorological Department apologises for naming the destructive cyclone over the Indian Ocean ‘Mahasen’, as the name stands for one the greatest kings of Sri Lanka.
Some nationalist groups claimed Mahasen was a Sinhala King who brought prosperity to the island. Thus, it was wrong for a destructive cyclone to be named after him, they argued.
King Mahasen ruled Lanka between 275 AD and 301 AD. The ancient ruler had fought for high morals among Buddhist monks and built irrigation tanks for the benefit of the masses. So, as the cyclone hovers near the island, the department has decided to let it go ‘nameless’.
