The cremation ceremony of the Most Venerable Keppetiyagoda Siriwimala Nayaka Thero, the Anunayaka of the Sri Lanka Ramanna Maha Nikaya and the Chief Incumbent of the Getambe Rajopavanaramaya in Kandy, is scheduled to take place today (21) at 2.00 p.m. at the Getambe Municipal Sports Ground, with state patronage.
The late Thero made a significant contribution to the revival of Buddhism and culture in Sri Lanka, with Getambe Rajopavanaramaya Temple serving as the centre of his religious and cultural activities.
His remains have been placed at the temple for public homage, allowing devotees and members of the public to pay their last respects.
Venerable Akurasse Siridhamma Wimala Thero, the custodian of Getambe Rajopawanaramaya, said that religious rites would commence at around 12.30 p.m. Members of the Maha Sangha are expected to offer robes in memory of the late Thero, perform the traditional water-pouring ceremony and transfer merits in his honour.
Following these rites, the remains will be taken from the temple to the Getambe Municipal Sports Ground, where the cremation ceremony will be conducted under the patronage of senior prelates, including the Mahanayaka and Anunayaka Theros representing Sri Lanka’s three Buddhist chapters, together with members of the Maha Sangha.
