The Democratic People’s Front (DPF) has decided to contest the Western Provincial Council elections on its own under the symbol of the ladder with DPF Leader Mano Ganesan as the chief candidate.

In a statement, the party stated that it will shed its affiliations with half-baked alliances and will contest in all three Districts of the Western Province.

Full statement:

Politburo of the Democratic People’s Front (DPF) led by Mano Ganesan has decided to contest the western provincial council elections on its own ladder symbol shedding half baked alliances. DPF leader Mano Ganesan will be the chief candidate in Colombo district and in effect lead the party campaign in WP. The party has decided to contest in all three districts of WP, the Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara. The decision on the Uva PC will be arrived later upon the PC is dissolved. The decision was unanimous after considering all options said DPF deputy leader and WPC member Dr. Nalliah Kumaraguruparan.

DPF Politburo chaired by party leader Mano Ganesan met today morning in Colombo at Sri Surya hotel. Dr. Kumaraguruparan MPC spoke to the media after the meeting explaining the PB decisions said further,

All sections of the people of this country are disillusioned with the present regime. We need not to wait until the general or presidential elections to take onto the government. Government is already facing defeats in many numbers of LG councils held by UPFA. The time is ripened for a common opposition alliance. We call upon opposition UNP, DP led by Sarath Fonseka and JVP to come closer under a common minimum program similar to what existed during the last presidential elections. We also call upon former president CBK to join hands and enter active politics to provide leadership to her own centre left forces. The Tamil and Muslim parties can be accommodated in such an alliance only if the national parties representing Sinhala masses come together.

But we are disappointed on the bilateral and internal disunities of the parties in the national opposition ranks. Half baked electoral alliances only help private agendas. Therefore we have decided to face the WPC elections on our own. We contested the Colombo Municipal council on our own and remain with the UNP providing the much needed working majority to the mayor of Colombo. Colombo is the only municipal council held by UNP and we provide crucial support to it. We will continue to do it and remain as a resolute party in the opposition ranks. We will reconsider our stand of going alone in the WPC elections if an opposition common alliance emerges. We will decide about the Uva elections once the PC is dissolved.
