The Civil Procedure Code (Amendment) Bill has been presented to Parliament today (03).
The Bill was tabled in Parliament by the Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa today's parliamentary proceedings.
Meanwhile, tensions erupted in Parliament today following a privilege issue raised by the Leader of the Opposition, Sajith Premadasa.
The issue arose over the failure to take up for debate the no-confidence motion against the Speaker of House, which was submitted by the opposition.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and several other Opposition MPs raised privilege issues in Parliament today, questioning the decision not to debate the motion.
However, tensions escalated after they were not given an opportunity to raise their privilege concerns. Opposition MPs subsequently entered the middle of the parliamentary chamber carrying placards and staged a protest.
During the proceedings, the Opposition Leader said the privilege issue concerned MPs' rights to express their views and submit motions in Parliament, as well as their right under parliamentary Standing Orders to bring a no-confidence motion against the Speaker.
He requested the Deputy Speaker to allow him to raise the relevant privilege issue before Parliament.
Premadasa further claimed that he had been given an appointment to visit the Speaker's office at 9.15 a.m. today to hand over the privilege complaint, but the Speaker was not present at the office at the scheduled time.
He said he had followed the required procedure to submit the privilege issue and reiterated his request for an opportunity to raise it in Parliament.
The situation subsequently escalated, leading to protests by Opposition MPs inside the parliamentary chamber.
