The Department of Meteorology has issued an Amber-level advisory for severe lightning affecting several areas across the island.
According to the advisory, thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur at several locations in 22 districts after 1.00 p.m. today (06).
The anticipated adverse weather conditions may increase the likelihood of thunderstorms and lightning strikes, posing a significant risk to public safety.
These conditions could disrupt outdoor activities, including sports, construction, agricultural operations and public events.
People exposed to the outdoors during thunderstorms may face a risk of serious injury or even death due to lightning strikes.
Furthermore, electrical and electronic equipment may be damaged, while electricity and communication services could experience disruptions.
The thundershowers may also be accompanied by strong winds and heavy rainfall, potentially resulting in localized infrastructure damage and transport disruptions.
In view of the prevailing risk, the public is advised to suspend or postpone outdoor sports, construction, agricultural and recreational activities whenever thunderstorms are approaching.
People should immediately seek shelter inside substantial buildings or enclosed, hard-topped vehicles. Beaches, swimming areas, lakes, rivers and other water bodies should be avoided during thunderstorms.
The public is also advised not to take shelter under isolated trees, tents, open sheds or partially enclosed structures.
During thunderstorms, people should stay away from electrical appliances, plumbing and wired electrical systems.
Outdoor events should be cancelled or relocated to safe indoor venues, while children and other vulnerable individuals should be kept indoors, it added.
