Two automatic spill gates at the Victoria Reservoir have been opened today (08) as heavy rainfall in the Central Province caused the water level of the reservoir to rise rapidly, officials have stated.
According to data recorded at 1.16 p.m. today, the reservoir's water level had risen to 438.04 metres above mean sea level.
The first spill gate has opened by 0.702 metres, while the second has opened by 0.705 metres.
As a result, water is being released into the Mahaweli River at a rate of 159 cubic metres per second (159 m³/s).
Authorities have urged residents living in low-lying areas along the Mahaweli River to remain vigilant and avoid entering or using the river due to the increased water flow.
