Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena today said that retired nursing officers will be recruited on a contract basis to fill shortages of nurses in government hospitals in the country.
He stated that the shortage of certain healthcare staff has badly affected the operation at hospitals and that currently a shortage of around 10,000 nurses exists in hospitals across the island.
Speaking during a ceremony at the Trincomalee Hospital today, the minister stated that the main reasons for the shortage was due to a large number of nurses retiring annually and other preferring foreign employment over local hospitals.
