Democratic Party leader and former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka today announced that their party will support Common Opposition Candidate Maithripala Sirisena at the forthcoming Presidential election.
Fonseka made the observation while addressing an event held in Colombo, this afternoon.
Fonseka also accused President Mahinda Rajapaksa of assisting and aiding the corrupted politicians. “The President takes no actions against those who have the so called ‘files’. Instead he feeds the culprits,” he added.
He pointed out that his party had no intention to promote a candidate for the Presidential election, since its key aspect was to defeat the Rajapaksa’s government by giving full-scale assistance to the Common Candidate.
“Unlike the 2010 Presidential election. Maithripala will get the support of all the opposition parties in our struggle to end this regime.” Fonseka said.
Maithripala Sirisena signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the opposition political parties including the Democratic Party with respect to the forthcoming Presidential election, last Monday. The Jathika Sangha Sammelanaya (JSS) and the jathika Hela Urumaya too announced that it will assist the Common Candidate.
