The Sri Lankan government issuing a statement expressed its concern over the developing situation in the Maldives following the arrest of former President Mohamed Nasheed.
“Sri Lanka, as a friendly neighbouring country is concerned about the recent developments in Maldives,” the Foreign Affairs Ministry statement said.
“It is hoped that all stakeholders in Maldives will resolve their differences in a peaceful manner, within the legal provisions in Maldives.” the statement added.
Criminal Court on Monday evening ruled that opposition leader and former Maldivian president Mohamed Nasheed was to be kept under police arrest until end of trial. The ruling came during the first hearing on the trial held at 4:00 pm which was presided over by Judge Abdulla Didi, Judge Abdul Baaree Yoosuf and Judge Shujau Usman.
