India should take lead in UNHRC on Sri Lanka Tamils issue: CPI

The Communist Party of India (CPI) today demanded that India should take the lead in evolving a consensus for a credible international probe into the alleged war crimes during the last phase of Sri Lanka’s war against the LTTE at the UN Human Rights Council meeting tomorrow.

Government of India should take the lead by following up on the unanimous resolution adopted by the Tamil Nadu Assembly demanding a credible probe involving international judges, CPI MP D Raja said.

A US-sponsored resolution on the issue is expected to be taken up at the UNHRC tomorrow.

He said the report of the Rights Commissioner has come out with the truth about what happened in the conflict that ended in 2009 as it has acknowledged that war crimes took place.

Raja said it was surprising that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj were keeping mum on the issue.

He said both of them should disclose how India would vote and see that the feelings of the Tamil Nadu people were honoured.
