Certain individuals attempt to politicize the decision to temporary suspend the progression of a section of the Uma Oya project in a bid to pressurize the people of Bandarawela, a Minister said on Friday.
Minister of Telecommunication and Digital Infrastructure, Harin Fernando told reporters in Colombo that he also accepts the decision of President Maithripala Sirisena in this regard.
Minister Fernando said there was no resistance from ministers who took part in a recent meeting with the President to temporary suspend the section of the project.
The Minister went on to say since nearly 48 per cent of the construction work had already been completed in 2015, the present government is not in a position to take responsibility of the project. “However, with the current situation, project’s responsibility rests with us,” he said.
Minister Fernando also said initially his name was proposed for the sub-committee appointed to look into the matter, yet he turned down the suggestion.
