Deputy Minister of Social Empowerment, Welfare and Kandyan Heritage Ranjan Ramanayake arrived at the Supreme Court a short while ago to respond to the allegations levied against him for being in contempt of court.

The Supreme Court issued a notice to Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake on October 12, to appear before Court on October 25, over the allegation of contempt of court.

A complaint was lodged against Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake stating that he has acted in a way that condescends the judiciary.

Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake made defamatory remarks against the judiciary on August 21, when he stated that a majority of judges within the country are corrupt and give biased rulings.

In response two petitions were filed against with the Supreme Court by the Sinhala Ravaya and retired Air Force Officer Sunil Perera.

The petitions highlighted the fact that such defamatory statements will shatter public confidence and provide a warped image of the judiciary to the people of Sri Lanka.

Following consideration, the Supreme Court judges summoned Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake to appear at court to investigate his statements.
