Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake says that the brutal killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi is not something unusual for Sri Lanka, which has witnessed incidents such as the murder of Lasantha Wickrematunge and disappearance of Prageeth Eknaligoda.
He stated this following an event held in Colombo yesterday (25), with regard to the murder of Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
He said that it is surprising that such a murder was carried out by Saudi’s Crown Prince Salman, who had taken many radical decisions in the recent past.
When queried by media persons as to what measures he would suggest for the safety of the journalists in the future, the Deputy Minister stated that every journalist should be provided with an Apple Watch.
This was in reference to the reports alleging that journalist Jamal Khashoggi used an Apple Watch to record audio of his killing at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
Meanwhile, a protest against the murder of Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi was held in front of the Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Colombo yesterday (25).
The protest was organized by the Sri Lankan web journalists’ association and a group of civil activists.
