Several video clips containing violent assault on a group of inmates at the Agunukolapelessa Prison have been disclosed.

Holding a press conference today (16), the Committee for Protecting Rights of Prisoners, revealed the CCTV footage obtained from a security camera set inside the prison premises.

Reportedly, the assault had taken place on the 22nd of November 2018.
The committee pointed out that the inmates had to face such violent incidents during the past few years.

All these inmates captured on the CCTV footage are still suspects, hence it is dubious as to why such an assault was carried out on them, the committee further emphasized.

The Secretary of Committee for Protecting Rights of Prisoners Dinesh Nandimal stated that the Prison Superintendent is to be held solely responsible for this situation.

The Committee revealed that the inmates had staged a protest on the 21st of October 2018 within the prison premises. Reportedly, this protest was against the STF officers forcing the relatives of the inmates to strip naked upon their entrance to the prison to visit the inmates.

The committee accused that the Prison Superintendent had given out this order himself to the STF officers to force the relatives of the inmates to strip naked and subsequently directed the inmates to stage the protest against the STF officers.

Meanwhile, the Prison Superintendent had also decoyed the inmates to cause damages to the cafeteria of the prison during the protest, Mr Nandimal stated.

Realizing that the Prison Superintendent is misleading them, the inmates had ceased causing damages to the state property and conducted protests demanding the suspension of the Prison Superintendent instead, the Committee for Protecting Rights of Prisoners stated.

Speaking in this regard, the Ministry of Ministry of Justice and Prison Reforms stated that measures have already been initiated to appoint a three-member committee to probe the violent assault on the inmates and a report would be submitted to the Minister without delay.
