Election Commission has taken the public for a joke – Sarath Weerasekara

The Election Commission has now taken the people for a joke by postponing elections, said Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Colombo District Candidate Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekara.

He says that by not setting proper conditions to hold elections, the public has now become confused. He added that this is a result of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.

Addressing a conference in Colombo, Weerasekara said that he is glad that he objected to the 19th Amendment even by himself.

The 19A had extended the power of the President to dissolve a government after 1 year of inception to four and a half years, he pointed out.

He says that the President should possess the power to dissolve a government that malpractices at any point after one year or so.

Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga used this power in 2003 when Ranil Wickremesinghe signed the Ceasefire Agreement with the LTTE, Weerasekara further said. To prove that her decision was correct, the public rejected the Wickremesinghe government and appointed another at the next election, he added.
