The surcharge of Rs. 26.00 imposed on diesel and petrol has been revoked with effect from midnight on June 23, says Power, Energy and Transport Minister Mahinda Amaraweera.
Sri Lanka will not increase the fuel prices despite the price hikes in the global market, the Minister said further during a media briefing held on Wednesday (24).
Following the revocation of surcharge on fuel, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation will incur a loss of over Rs. 35.00 per petrol litre and nearly Rs. 25.00 per diesel litre, he added.
The recent fuel price reduction in the global market was a temporary phenomenon, Minister Amaraweera said, adding that once the restrictions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic were lifted, the fuel prices have started to move up again.
He explained that this is the Sri Lankan government did not slash the fuel prices at the time.
Fuel prices will not be hiked in Sri Lanka until the end of this year despite the increases in the global market, Minister Amaraweera noted.
