10-month-old at Ridgeway Hospital tests Covid-19 positive

A Covid-19 infection has been detected from the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children in Colombo, on Thursday (08).

The Director of the Hospital Dr. G. Wijesuriya confirmed that a 10-month-old infant under treatment has tested positive for the virus.

The infant from Minuwangoda was admitted to the Lady Ridgeway Hospital on Wednesday (07).

Dr Wijesuriya said the medical staff of the institution, taking note of the symptoms of the infant, had kept her apart from other patients.

A PCR test carried out the infant later revealed that she has contracted the virus.

The 10-month-old has since been transferred to the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) in Angoda.

Speaking further, Dr Wijesuriya said, the father of a 5-month-old receiving treatment at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital has also contracted Covid-19.

The infant was admitted to the Hospital in August and his parents, who are residents of Kandy, are temporarily staying in the Kotikawatte area, Dr Wijesuriya continued.

PCR tests have been carried out on the parents when they recently visited the Hospital and test results have confirmed that the father is positive for the virus.

However, it has not yet been confirmed if the mother and the infant have been infected with the virus, Dr Wijesuriya said further.

As a precautionary measure, the staff members attached to the ward where the 5-month-old was being treated have been directed to PCR tests.
