UN formed to protect nations but doing the opposite: JHU

The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) this morning (June 28) went on a protest march from the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress premises to the United Nations (UN) office at Bauddhaloka Mawatha in Colombo.

The march was against the appoint of a team to probe alleged war crimes in Sri Lanka and to advise UN Secretary general Ban Ki Moon on the happenings during the final stages of the conflict in Sri Lanka.

JHU leader Ven. Omalpe Sobitha Thera who was in the forefront of the march said that it was a matter of grave concern that the UN which had been formed to protect nations was acting against those very countries it was supposed to protect.

The UN has no right to meddle in the internal affairs of any sovereign nation. By its recent actions like appointing the three member panel to advise the Secretary General on non existent war crimes charges, the UN is now supporting terrorism, the Thera said.

JHU legal advisor Udaya Gammanpila said that according to the estimates of the United Nations itself, the deaths reported during the final stages of the war against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were only some 7,000.

Now the figures have surprisingly increased by leaps and bounds. The United States is acting out of jealousy as Sri Lanka was able to vanquish the LTTE. Even after nine years the US has been unable to destroy the Al-Qaeda or the Taliban. So it is using Ban Ki Moon and the UN to hit back at Sri Lanka and make the country dance to its tunes, charged Mr. Gammanpila.

“Sri Lanka is not Iraq. We will fight to the last against any foreign interference in Sri Lanka’s internal affairs and protect our sovereignty,” Udaya Gammanpila reiterated.
