Measures have been taken to release 10 million imported eggs to the market from today (18).

The Sri Lanka State Trading (General) Corporation stated that the relevant stock of eggs with the approval of the Department of Animal Production and Health (DAPH) is to be distributed to Lanka Sathosa from today.

Accordingly, the general public will be able to purchase eggs during the festive season through the Sathosa network of outlets without any shortage, it said.

In the meantime, another 15 million imported eggs are expected to reach Sri Lanka and steps will be taken to send those stocks for quality inspection as soon as possible, the cooperation said.

After the relevant tests, the eggs are to be distributed through the Sathosa chain of outlets as well as to several selected supermarkets.

The government had taken steps to import eggs from India on several occasions recently in order to bring down prices due to local egg producers increasing prices of eggs on several occasions.

However, with the announcement of the government’s decision to stop the import of eggs, the price of a local egg once again increased to Rs. 55 - Rs. 65 while under the prevailing situation, the government has decided to import eggs once again.

The Ministry of Trade stated that in order to prevent consumers from being inconvenienced, steps will be taken to import eggs from India under several phases in the future.
