Two wild elephants have died after being electrocuted in the Okkampitiya area in Buttala.
Wildlife officials suspect that the animals were killed after coming into contact with an illegally laid electric wire connected to a sugarcane cultivation area.
The deceased elephants are believed to be approximately one year old and around twenty years old.
A suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident, while a post-mortem examination of the elephants’ carcasses is scheduled to be conducted today (14).
Further investigations are being carried out jointly by officers from the Okkampitiya Police Station and the Monaragala Wildlife Office.
