Advisory issued for strong winds and rough seas

The Department of Meteorology has issued an ‘Amber’ advisory for strong winds and rough seas for sea areas extending from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.

 

According to the Met. Department, sea areas off the coasts extending from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota will be very rough at times, with strong gusty winds of up to 50–60 kmph.

 

Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture into these sea areas until further notice.

 

The advisory further warns naval and fishing communities not to venture into the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar.

 

The wave height may increase to about 2.0–2.5 metres in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota, it said.

 

Accordingly, naval and fishing communities have been requested to pay close attention to future forecasts issued by the Department of Meteorology.
