Appeals Court to hear Yoshitha Rajapaksa’s revision petition tomorrow

The Court of Appeal has ordered that a revision petition filed by Yoshitha Rajapaksa, son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, be taken up for examination tomorrow.

The petition seeks a ruling declaring that the charge of “conspiracy” brought against him by the Attorney General under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act cannot be maintained.

The petition is scheduled to be heard before a Court of Appeal bench comprising Justices Amal Ranaraja and Dr. Sumudu Premachandra, said Ada Derana reporter.

When the petition was previously taken up for consideration, counsel Hafeel Farisz, appearing for Yoshitha Rajapaksa, informed the court that although a woman named Daisy Forrest had also been named as a defendant alongside his client in the case, she was subsequently released from the case by the Attorney General.

The counsel further argued that under such circumstances, maintaining the charge of “conspiracy” solely against his client is contrary to the law.

However, Deputy Solicitor General Janaka Bandara, appearing for the Attorney General, countered the submission, informing the court that a charge of “conspiracy” can be maintained even against a single defendant.

Accordingly, the Court of Appeal has ordered that a full hearing of the matter be conducted tomorrow.
