Passenger train services between Nanu Oya and Badulla stations on the Upcountry railway line resumed today (20) after being suspended for seven months due to the damage caused by Cyclone Ditwah.
Train operations had been limited due to a landslide on the railway line in the Parakumpura area between Ambewela and Nanu Oya, with services operating only between Ambewela and Badulla.
Following the complete restoration of the affected section by railway engineers and workers, the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) and a private institution, authorities resumed train operations from today.
Accordingly, the ‘Podi Menike’ train resumed its journey from Nanu Oya to Badulla after religious observances held at the Nanu Oya Railway Station at 9.00 a.m. this morning.
The Chairman of the Nuwara Eliya District Coordination Committee and Member of Parliament Manjula Suraweera Arachchi, along with Upper District Railway Executive Engineer Dhanushka, also attended the event.
Speaking at the occasion, officials said they expect full operations on the Upcountry railway line from Colombo to Badulla to be restored before the end of this year.
