Egypt, Iran settle for 1-1 draw in Group G finale

Egypt and Iran played to a 1-1 draw Friday in their final FIFA World Cup Group G match, a result that sent Egypt to the Round of 32 while leaving Iran awaiting confirmation of its knockout-stage fate.

 

Egypt finished group play unbeaten, earning five points with a win over New Zealand and draws against Belgium and Iran. The result secured the Pharaohs a place in the knockout stage.

 

Iran also completed group play unbeaten, drawing New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt. However, the single point left Team Melli needing other results to determine whether it would advance as one of the tournament’s best third-place teams.

 

Belgium’s victory over New Zealand secured first place in Group G and officially eliminated New Zealand from the tournament.
