The Sri Lankan Rupee had depreciated by 8 per cent against the US dollar in 2026, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) has confirmed.
According to the CBSL, the buying rate of the US dollar was Rs. 332.22 while the selling rate stood at Rs. 341.87 at the end of trading on Friday (26).
The Governor of the Central Bank Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe last month said the present depreciation of the Sri Lankan Rupee is fundamentally different from the sharp fall in 2022, as this time, it is driven by global conditions rather than domestic mismanagement.
He noted that in March–April 2022, the rupee depreciated up to Rs. 370 purely due to internal factors, while other regional currencies remained stable.
However, at present currency depreciation is occurring in regional countries, with the US dollar strengthening amid global uncertainty.
