
The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring equal access to education for all children, including those with special needs, stating that no child should be left behind in the education system, the PM’s Office stated.
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya made this statement while participating in the “Sarasavi Diriyo Abhiman 2026” programme, organised to recognise students with special needs pursuing university education, held on yesterday (11) at Temple Trees.
"It is the policy of the Government to ensure equal access to education for all children, including those with special needs, such as neurodivergent and those with autism or dyslexia, without leaving any child behind in the education system. These students are not a burden to the country; they are valuable human resources capable of contributing to sustainable development," she said.
Prime Minister Amarasuriya further stated that Vice Chancellors and education authorities have a special responsibility to ensure that the practical facilities required by these students are provided within universities.
During the occasion, financial assistance of Rs. 100,000 each was presented to 236 students with special needs, the statement t added.
