Sri Lanka Police have announced a special security and traffic plan for the fourth Randoli Perahera of the historic Kandy Esala Perahera, which will be held tomorrow (26).

The annual Esala Perahera of the Sri Dalada Maligawa commenced on August 18 and is scheduled to continue until August 28.

Police said special arrangements have been made to ensure public safety and smooth traffic flow during the Perahera, including roadblocks, security checks, vehicle and individual inspections, tourist guidance and designated parking arrangements.

Perahera Route and Timing

Tomorrow’s fourth Randoli Perahera will commence from the Sri Dalada Maligawa at auspicious time of 6.44 p.m.

The Perahera will proceed along:

  • Dalada Veediya

  • Yatinuwara Veediya

  • Cross Street

  • Kotugodella Veediya

  • Kande Veediya

  • D.S. Senanayake Veediya

  • Raja Veediya

It will then return to the Sri Dalada Maligawa.

Alternative Routes for Motorists

Police have introduced alternative routes to minimize traffic congestion during the Perahera period.

Heavy vehicles travelling from Katugastota towards Kandy will be able to use Tilak Ratnayake Mawatha via the Mahaiyawa Junction and the Police Junction.

Light vehicles arriving from Katugastota can travel via D.S. Senanayake Veediya, Cross Street and Yatinuwara Veediya before joining Tilak Ratnayake Mawatha.

Vehicles travelling towards Katugastota from Kandy can use Tilak Ratnayake Mawatha via the Police Junction.

Vehicles arriving from Tennekumbura and Ampitiya can travel along the Sangaraja Mawatha towards Wales Park Junction and then use Ehelepola Kumarihami Mawatha to access the Bogambara and railway station areas.

Motorists travelling from Kandy towards Ampitiya and Teldeniya can use Dalada Veediya from the Clock Tower Roundabout, passing the side entrance of the Queen's Hotel and continuing along the Sangaraja Mawatha.

Vehicles can also travel towards Ampitiya and Tennekumbura via Ehelepola Kumarihami Mawatha, Rajapihilla Mawatha, Wales Park Junction and Sangaraja Mawatha.

Mosque Road has been divided to facilitate traffic movement in both directions.

Meanwhile, motorists travelling between Colombo and Kandy can use the William Gopallawa Mawatha and the Old Peradeniya Road in both directions.

Police have urged motorists and the public to follow the temporary traffic arrangements and cooperate with officers deployed along the Perahera route.
