The Police Media Division has issued a special clarification regarding a viral video circulating on social media showing a young child walking past a car that was on fire.
Police stated that while the video is being shared with an accompanying audio clip claiming that the child set the vehicle ablaze, investigations have so far found no eyewitness testimony or scientific evidence to support that allegation.
The incident had occurred within the premises of a school in the Kurunegala Police Division.
According to police reports, a car valued at approximately Rs. 14 million, which had been parked on the school grounds, was destroyed in a fire on July 3, 2026.
A complaint was subsequently lodged with the Kurunegala Police alleging that an eight-year-old child was responsible for setting the vehicle on fire.
Following the complaint, Kurunegala Police had launched a comprehensive investigation. Authorities confirmed that the child seen walking near the burning vehicle in the video is an eight-year-old student of the same school.
However, police emphasized that there is currently no evidence proving that the child was responsible for the fire.
Kurunegala Police have already reported the matter to the court, while investigations remain ongoing.
As part of the inquiry, the Government Analyst's Department has been tasked with conducting forensic examinations and providing expert reports to determine the actual cause of the fire.
The Police Media Division has therefore urged the public not to be misled by false claims and misinformation circulating on social media before the official investigation is concluded.
