A male and a female suspect who allegedly assaulted a four-year-old girl and abandoned her in an isolated location in Wattegama have been arrested by police.
The suspects were taken into custody by officers attached to the Hali-Ela Police earlier today (14) in the Hali-Ela area. Police stated that the female suspect has been identified as the child's mother.
The arrests were made following investigations launched after a tip-off received through the police emergency hotline yesterday (13).
Acting on the information, a team of officers from the Wattegama Police took the child into their care after she was found abandoned in an isolated area along the Wattegama–Yatirawana Road.
Police investigations revealed that the child had allegedly been left at the location at around 7:00 a.m. yesterday by individuals who arrived in a three-wheeler. Investigators subsequently examined CCTV footage to identify the vehicle believed to have been used to transport the child.
Based on the findings of the investigation, police arrested the two suspects in connection with the incident.
