Police have recovered the motorcycle allegedly used by a suspect who attacked a police officer with a sharp weapon before fleeing in Bokundara, Piliyandala this morning (19).

The motorcycle was found abandoned near a garden close to a residence along the Piliyandala–Maharagama Road.

Police said two suspects had fled on a motorcycle after attacking officers with a sharp weapon in Bokundara earlier today. Officers pursuing the suspects attempted to stop them, but they continued to flee.

During the incident, the pillion rider allegedly attacked a police constable with a sharp weapon. Police then opened fire, with one bullet striking the suspect in the waist, causing him to fall from the motorcycle.

The injured suspect was subsequently arrested by police, while the motorcycle rider managed to escape.

The arrested suspect has been identified as a 24-year-old resident of Bandaragama.

Police said the suspects were wanted in connection with an earlier incident in which four individuals armed with sharp weapons allegedly attacked residents of a house on O.P. Perera Mawatha in Boralesgamuwa and caused severe damage to the property before fleeing towards Piliyandala.

Following information received regarding the suspects’ escape route, police had established a roadblock in the Weerasinghe Mawatha area of Bokundara. The suspects allegedly attempted to evade officers after noticing the police presence.

The injured suspect, the police constable who was attacked, and a young woman injured in the earlier assault are currently receiving treatment at the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital.

Further investigations are being conducted by the Piliyandala and Boralesgamuwa Police.
