
Prisons Department Media Spokesman, Commissioner A.C. Gajanayake, stated that a total of 11 inmates have been hospitalised after sustaining injuries during the tense situation that arose at the New Magazine Prison in Borella last night (07).
He stated that the situation at the prison has now been brought under control, and arrangements have been made to transfer nine inmates involved in the incident to other prisons.
Gajanayake added that the Police, Police Special Task Force (STF) and Tri-Forces have been deployed to strengthen security at the prison, and that their assistance was sought to bring the situation under control.
He also stated that further investigations have been launched into the incident.
Meanwhile, authorities have decided to suspend prison visits at the New Magazine Prison for today due to the prevailing security situation.
