
Four people, including a six-year-old child, have died in separate road accidents reported in various parts of the country over the past 24 hours.
In the Kandakuliya, area of Kalpitiya, a motorcycle travelling towards Kalpitiya had veered off the road after the rider lost control and crashed into an electricity pole.
The motorcycle rider and a six-year-old child who was travelling with him had sustained serious injuries and were admitted to the Kalpitiya Hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries.
The deceased have been identified as a 40-year-old man and a six-year-old child, both residents of the Kandakuliya area, police said.
Meanwhile, a cyclist was killed after being struck by a van travelling towards Puttalam while crossing the Colombo-Puttalam Road near Lunuwila Junction.
The cyclist, who sustained serious injuries, has succumbed upon admission to the Marawila Hospital. He is believed to be between 55 and 60 years old, and his identity has not yet been confirmed.
Police have arrested the driver of the van in connection with the accident.
In another incident in Madampe town, a cyclist travelling towards the Old Town area had knocked down by a van that approached from behind. The van had fled the scene following the accident.
The 62-year-old cyclist, a resident of Madolkele, sustained serious injuries and succumbed after being admitted to the Madampe Hospital.
Police have since arrested the driver of the van that allegedly fled the scene.
