The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has warned that traders are required to keep proper documents or invoices verifying the source of goods held for sale, storage or distribution.
The requirement has been in force since April 27, 2022, under Order No. 83 issued by the CAA, and applies to manufacturers, warehouse operators, suppliers, distributors and all traders.
According to the Authority, invoices must contain essential information including the supplier’s name and address, date of purchase, purchase price, type and quantity of goods and the batch number where applicable.
The CAA warned that businesses could face serious consequences if they are unable to establish where goods in their possession were purchased.
The Authority said the issue is particularly significant in the case of imported goods, as the absence of proper invoices can make it difficult to trace the supply chain.
During market inspections and raids, CAA officials will check whether traders maintain the required documentation. Goods found in violation of the relevant requirements may be seized and produced before court, with legal action taken against those responsible.
The CAA said the enforcement of these requirements is aimed at protecting legitimate businesses that maintain proper records, while preventing goods from entering the market through undocumented and untraceable supply chains.
