Death toll rises to 72 as dengue cases surpass 94,000 in Sri Lanka

Dengue-related deaths in Sri Lanka have risen to 72 so far this year as total dengue cases exceeded 94,000, according to the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU).

 

A total of 94,292 dengue cases have been reported so far this year, with 29,962 cases recorded in July alone. Another 8,956 cases have been reported during the first few days of August.

 

The Western Province accounts for the highest share of cases at 52.92%, with 49,901 cases. The Southern Province has recorded 13,779 cases, while 8,551 cases have been reported from the Central Province.

 

At district level, Gampaha has recorded the highest number of cases at 20,081, followed by Colombo with 18,709 cases. Kandy has reported 6,846 cases, Matara 6,099, and Kalutara 6,093.

 

Meanwhile, 76 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) areas remain classified as high-risk zones for dengue.
