Jaffna student tops Tamil Medium in 2026 Scholarship Exam

Surendhar Sabeen of Thangamma Appakutty Junior School in Mallakam, Jaffna, has secured first place in the Tamil medium at the 2026 Grade Five Scholarship Examination with a score of 188 marks.

 

Teachers said it is the first time a student from the school, located in a rural area of the Jaffna District, has achieved the top position in the scholarship examination, according to Ada Derana reporter.

 

Speaking after the release of the results, Sabeen thanked his parents and all the teachers who had guided him in his education from a young age.

 

He said he had worked hard to prepare for the examination and hopes to continue his studies and become a person who can contribute positively to the country.

 

The Grade Five Scholarship Examination was held on August 9, with 294,132 students registered to sit the examination. Of them, 289,867 candidates appeared for the examination.

 

The cut-off mark was 139, while around 56,000 students obtained marks above the cut-off.

 

A total of 1,018 students with special needs also sat the examination, while 18 candidates took the examination using Braille.
