The Inspector General of Police, Priyantha Weerasooriya has directed the Police Special Investigation Unit to conduct an internal investigation into certain shortcomings and omissions identified in an ongoing investigation into a consignment of illegal drugs allegedly smuggled into Sri Lanka from Pakistan.
The drugs were allegedly concealed in two containers transported from Pakistan and stored at the Colombo Port’s CICT Terminal before being seized by authorities.
Police said the internal investigation was ordered to examine the shortcomings identified in connection with the handling of the case, according to a statement by the Police Media Division.
However, police emphasized that the internal inquiry would not impede or interfere with the ongoing investigation into the two containers and the seized drug consignment.
The Central Crime Investigation Bureau is currently handling the investigation into the seized containers.
According to the Police Media division, the investigation is being conducted transparently and in accordance with established procedures and due process.
