The owner of a private business in Maradana has been fined Rs. 100,000 by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court after six packaged Thai robes were found on sale without mandatory consumer information.

The Thai robes were discovered during an inspection conducted by officers of the Consumer Affairs Authority.

The authority said the packages did not carry key information required by law, including the maximum retail price, manufacturer’s or importer’s address and telephone number and date of manufacture.

Legal proceedings were filed against the business for allegedly violating Order No. 55 of Extraordinary Gazette No. 1918/20 dated June 11, 2015.

After considering the case, the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court imposed a Rs. 100,000 fine on the owner of a company.

The Consumer Affairs Authority has warned of a growing number of low-quality and unidentified Buddhist robes and ‘Atapirikara’ entering the market. Complaints have reportedly been received from Buddhist monks who have encountered various problems with such products.

The authority has also received reports of packages containing unsuitable or unrelated items instead of the products indicated on the packaging.

Consumers have been urged to exercise caution when purchasing Thai robes and Atapirikara, particularly by checking that packages contain all mandatory information and, where possible, inspecting the contents before making a purchase.

They have also been advised to obtain and retain a receipt containing accurate information about the transaction.
