Sri Lanka Police have intensified operations to detect and take action against drivers operating vehicles under the influence of drugs or alcohol, with special attention being given to high-risk categories of vehicles.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Traffic Control and Road Safety W. P. J. Senadheera said arrangements had been made to inform all traffic officers across the island about the initiative.

The DIG said an analysis of daily fatal and serious road accidents had identified several major contributing factors, including drug use, drunk driving, dangerous and reckless driving, and severe fatigue.

Accordingly, special attention will be paid to drivers of tipper trucks, lorries, three-wheelers, and passenger buses during the inspections.

Senadheera further stated that several bus drivers and conductors who were found to have been operating while under the influence of drugs had been arrested and produced before the courts. Subsequently, steps had been taken to suspend their driving licences.

Meanwhile, the Police have requested members of the public to report bus drivers who are found to be speeding excessively, engaging in competitive racing, driving recklessly, or operating vehicles under the influence of drugs.

The senior police officer emphasized that strict legal action would be taken against those found to have violated the law based on information received from the public, regardless of their status.
