The Irrigation Department has warned that minor flooding could occur in the low-lying areas of the Attanagalu Oya and Kalu Ganga if significant rainfall is received today (15).

Irrigation Director Engineer L. S. Sooriyabandara said water levels in the Attanagalu Oya and at Millakanda and Ellagawa along the Kalu Ganga are currently at their highest levels.

Meanwhile, although the water level of the Kelani Ganga has not risen rapidly, it is showing a gradual increase, and there is no flood threat currently, he said.

He added that water levels have risen to some extent in the low-lying areas of the Nilwala, Gin, Kelani, Kalu, Attanagalu Oya and Bentara rivers.

However, as water levels could rise further depending on the prevailing weather conditions, the Irrigation Department has urged residents living in the low-lying areas of these rivers to remain vigilant and exercise caution.
