The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has launched a special investigation following complaints from consumers regarding certain brands of baby diapers sold in the market, particularly concerning tearing and deterioration during use.
As part of the investigation, CAA officials traced the supply and distribution channels of the relevant diapers and raided two businesses located in Kottawa and Pettah.
Legal action has been initiated against the two businesses for displaying and wholesale distribution of imported baby diapers without the name, address, telephone number or website details of the registered importer, in violation of Order No. 85.
When the cases were taken up before the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court, the two businesses pleaded guilty. Accordingly, the Kottawa outlet was fined Rs. 10,000, while the Pettah outlet was fined Rs. 25,000.
The CAA has urged the public to carefully check mandatory labeling information on the packaging of sanitary products such as baby diapers, including the name, address and telephone number of the importer.
Consumers who experience tearing or any other quality-related issue while using such products are also advised to retain the relevant packaging and purchase receipt and lodge a complaint by calling the CAA hotline 1977 during office hours.
